From 1991 to 1994, Den Selvejende Institution Søbygaard (a not-for-profit organisation) acquired the heavily decaying Søbygaard. Beginning with the manor house and then the farm buildings and the land around.
There was quite enough to start with! Financially it was an enormous task. Therefore the restoration has extended over many years – and it is far from finished yet.

It has only been possible to complete the individual stages by the kind assistance from a wide range of public authorities and private foundations over the years. The willingness to support should be seen in the light of the involved authorities' opinion that Søbygaard is one of the really valuable historical farms in Denmark, because the entire area – the farm and the celler below the manor house in particular – is so unspoilt in its original main features despite the decay.
